On Monday 10th July I was asked to join the panel for the Community Safety Meeting held in Streatham.

In the past fortnight Streatham has suffered from several violent incidents in Madeira Road and by Valley Road. In response, the local councillors held a public meeting with Lambeth Police, Chuka Umunna MP, ward councillors, Lambeth Council and the Streatham Wells Safer Neighbourhood Panel.

It was an opportunity to:

  • hear from the police about the incidents
  • discuss the impact of knife crime on our communities
  • understand wider policing issues
  • and learn how you can get involved in community initiatives
I was asked to talk about the problems faced by parents trying to prevent their children from going off the rails, especially in terms of avoiding them being involved in youth violence – a real problem for kids growing up in south London, and their parents.
I would like to say a big thank you to Cllr Mohammed Seedat for the invitation and opportunity to contribute to the panel.
